Xi'An Day 2 Lunchtime

We then headed to the Muslim Quarter for lunch which was much the same as we've had everywhere else, except no chance of any Western cutlery, even serving spoons.

After lunch we had free time to wander around the area and despite being warned to keep a tight hold on our valuables, we found everyone very friendly and a safe, enjoyable experience.

We didn't have a clue what much of the stuff on the stalls was, but I think I can confidently say some of this is bread!

Someone obviously has too much time on their hands if they can fashion meat like this.

These look to me like Pigs Trotters, but we're in the Muslim Quarter?

Two of the more gruesome offerings.

Potatoes

If you can put it on a skewer, you can sell/eat it.

The next 3 are particularly disturbing - eggs, potatoes, dumplings, deep sea creatures - who knows?

There were a couple of these smoke breathing things around at the entrance to buildings - again, I don't know what they're all about.

This one obviously needed a prod to get going.

Moving on to desserts.

We saw dummies like this in several shops and they were so life-like you almost found yourself saying Ni Hao (hello)

Periodically they would go into a bowing routine.

A few people shots, some taken sneakily.

I wasn't sure if this lady was offering me a crisp or begging?

A couple of cute kids.

Unfortunately I got so excited when I saw what was going on here I messed up the first two shots.

So I'm very grateful to them for posing so beautifully for me.

This last one is a complete mystery to me; on the left are skewers which say "meat" of some kind, whereas the highly coloured substance on the right, also on skewers, says dessert.

This stall was definitely the most popular and we think it was serving the Chinese Muslim equivalent of McDonald's.

I usually rely on dear old Google (other search engines are available) when I get home to get a bit of detail but it's letting me down badly here with no info on these statues.

Obviously the only place to eat around here.

I think it was the best hour of the whole holiday so far.
