Xi'an - Day 2 Evening

Tonight's meal was billed as a special - enjoy a delicious feast of traditional Shui Jiao dumplings before a performance of Tang Dynasty dancing.

It started off OK, although clearly catering for the tourists the place was nicely laid out.

And we had an excellent view of the stage.  Luckily I could tuck myself in the corner so I didn't have to worry about blocking someone's view when/if I lifted my camera.

Apart from the starters, the meal consisted solely of dumplings in different forms - ones shaped like frogs and hedgehogs.

Shrimps and lobsters (although they look more like lips)

These last two were a bit of a mystery, maybe the red one was a chicken and the green peas were definitely supposed to be eyes.

Ian said they were actually quite revolting and the colder they got, the worse they were.  Obviously I wasn't going to risk any of them so a vegetarian alternative had been ordered for me.

And here it is, my "special dinner" - a bowl of broccoli

I hit the roof - this was supposed to be a "special meal" and this was all they could produce.  I told Sally, very politely, what I thought of the place and eventually I was also given a bowl of salad.

The show that followed was actually quite well done, it boasted a "live orchestra" although I'm not sure 6 musicians constitute an orchestra and judging by the expressions on the faces they were barely alive too.

The leading lady put me in mind of Judy Garland but there was something else about her that I couldn't quite put my finger on.

The digital lighting effects played havoc with my camera, producing all kinds of weird images.

Got it - she has a wonky eye!

A very good show but for me the evening was completely ruined by the appalling food and by the Indian "gentlemen" seated behind us who talked very loudly the entire way through the show.
